Identifying Carpet Beetles Problems
There are several species of carpet beetles (Dermestidae) that belong to this general classification. Varied, black and common carpet beetles may be found in structures. They are small (1/8 inch or less) and round to oval in shape. They have a complete life cycle and the larvae are responsible for damage. Adult beetles can have white, yellow, orange and black colors. Larvae of each species have characteristic hairs or bristles.
Locating Carpet Beetle Infestations
Carpet beetle infestations can damage many natural fibers (i.e. cotton and wool) and will also feed on any protein source (i.e. dead insects and rodents, fur, feathers, pet hair, as well as some stored products). Adult carpet beetle infestations may feed outside the structure on plants or flowers and migrate in through open windows. Exoskeletons of larvae can be used to identify the species.
